We travelled with our private guide from Queenstown to Franz Josef to Greymouth to take the Kiwi Rail train through the alps to Christchurch. What an amazing experience. Two days that showed the value of Private Touring done right. My wife and I have had our share of group tours. They are good for what they are, but the process of following a tour guide with a flag around and hearing scripted spiels is just not our thing. Our two days with Fiona in the Christchurch area were the complete opposite of those big group mulling abouts. We had experiences at our pace with conversation rather than speeches, and we really got to know Fiona and the area from a more personal perspective. On top of that, Fiona brought the full depth of her experience to the tour, knowing who to book the harbor cruise with and why, where to sit, when to arrive to avoid the cruise crowds, and where to eat. And all of that was done with an eye towards the local proprietors who really know the area. We spent a day to Akaroa and back by car and a day for the TranzAlpine train to Arthur’s pass and back by car. Both were fun, engaging and interesting trips. Fiona asked about our desires and wishes and adjusted the itinerary accordingly. We learned about the economic and political environment and some of the history. All in all it was a fabulous two days led by a great personal tour guide…well worth (Canterbury Guides) it if you want to go beyond the typical touring and get to know the area.
