Tourism industry looks for unique symbol for Christchurch

September 13th, 2011

The tourism industry is calling for a powerful city icon to ‘wow’ visitors and attract them to Christchurch following February’s earthquake.

A joint submission by Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism, and the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand, to the Draft Central City Plan believes a stand-out structure could become a unique symbol.

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter says they’re open-minded on what form it could take.

“I just think we’ve got an opportunity. We’re going to end up with a lot of empty spaces where we could build some new stuff – let’s put it out there to the creative people and say what could we build here that really gets people’s attention,” he says.

Mr Hunter says visitors are vital to Christchurch’s CBD recovery.
